We are open!

It has been a rollercoaster of events these past few months. But now, as the tide is ebbing, we are back open to see patients! Dr Jay is now available three days a week at our Willoughby practice, and is again seeing patients at Miranda once a month.

Dr Jay is now available to see patients, old or new, for check-ups, treatment and general anaesthetic procedures.

If your appointment was rescheduled during the lockdown period, your name is on a waiting list and you will be contacted shortly by one of our staff to book you in. Alternatively, you can call us on 048 18 10 200 or 02 8622 3922 to book an appointment today.

Though we have opened our doors once more, Dr Jay and our staff are still remaining vigilant. We have implemented new cleaning schedules and the recommended infection control practices to mitigate any spread of COVID-19. We now ask that upon entering the practice, patients and accompanying carers practice hand hygiene either in the bathroom or with the provided hand sanitiser. We also ask that everyone who enters the practice consent to a non-invasive temperature check. Furthermore, before any scheduled appointment, our team will screen patients and carers so that any person in a high risk group has their treatment needs met with respect to the safety of our staff and our patients.

Our practice is committed to providing quality and safe care for all our patients. Due to the rising concern about COVID-19, our practice has decided to implement a few changes for the coming months. We have reviewed recent guidelines published by the Australian Dental Association, Department of Health and the World Health Organisation, and are proactively adjusting our procedures to match.

Changes to Appointments

As of Tuesday, 1st April 2020, the following changes were implemented until review in the next two months:

  • We will be limiting procedures with heavy aerosols (droplets in the air). Routine treatment, including restorations and cleans, will be limited with respect to what is clinically necessary.
  • Non-urgent treatment may be postponed.
  • We will not be seeing patients at our Miranda clinic for the next two months. If you have an appointment to see Dr Jay at Miranda within the next two months, our staff will be in contact.
  • Wherever possible, we will be conducting review or consultation appointments over the phone. If you have such an appointment, our staff will contact you.
  • General anaesthetic procedures will be limited to urgent treatment. If you are scheduled to have a dental procedure under general anaesthetic, our staff will contact you to confirm or postpone your procedure.

For Your Appointment

If you are coming in for an appointment at Willoughby, we ask that you abide by the following hygiene guidelines:

  • Use the provided hand sanitiser upon entering the clinic.
  • Maintain social distancing of more than 1.5 metres where possible. We have adjusted our waiting room to encourage this.
  • Avoid touching frequently-handled surfaces, such as door knobs, benches, pens, etc.
  • Practice cough etiquette by covering coughs and sneezes and washing your hands frequently.
  • Contact us immediately, and consider postponing your appointment, if you feel unwell; watch out for symptoms such as, but not limited to, coughing, sore throat, shortness of breath and/or a fever.
  • Contact us immediately, and consider postponing your appointment, if in the last 14 days you have returned from overseas, or have been in contact with someone who is confirmed to have COVID-19.

New Appointments

Our practice is still open for appointments. If you need any treatment, please contact our staff and we can advise you on a case by case basis.

Our first priority is to the safety of our patients. We are abiding by the current guidelines for hygiene, and continue to modify our standards based on the latest updates.
Thank you for your patience in these trying times. If your appointment has been postponed for any reason, you will be put on a waiting list and we will contact you again in three to four months to update you on the situation and/or reschedule your appointment. We will do our very best to contact every patient with an upcoming appointment. However, if you have an appointment within two days and we have not contacted you, please give us a call.

This issue is ever-evolving. As such, further changes may be implemented in the coming weeks. We will keep you posted on any further changes. 

Phobias and Anxiety: A Story About General Anaesthetic

Everyone complains about the dentist: “it hurts!”; “I don’t like the sounds!”; “my jaw aches afterwards!”. But no one’s fear could come close to Mark’s. When Mark was eleven, he had a bad experience with the dentist. He didn’t want to get into it, but suffice to say, Mark had never been back.

Thirteen years later, and Mark noticed that food kept getting stuck in between two of his teeth. The possibility of a cavity terrified him; that would mean he’d have to see a dentist!

Mark put it off and put it off. It wasn’t until three months after he noticed the hole that Mark saw an article in the paper about a dentist that specialised in special needs. She offered general anaesthetic for her dental treatment. Mark felt his heart lift; general

Autism: A Story About General Anaesthetic

Lisa was scared. She was in a strange place with lots of lights and sounds and smells and people rushing back and forth. Mum was holding Lisa’s hand, reducing her fright.

The doctor came up to them. “Hello, Lisa. How are you feeling?”

Lisa hummed. She was scared, but she knew this doctor. He was going to help her go to sleep.

“We’re ready for you now, Lisa. Would you like to get on this bed for us?”

There was an uncomfortable looking bed beside Lisa. She did not like it. But Mum was there, holding her hand, and the doctor was smiling. Lisa knew that this would be good for her, so she climbed onto the bed. She lay on her side so she could see Mum, still holding her hand.

“Thank you, lovely,” Mum said.

A nurse came and helped the doctor push the bed forward. Lisa startled. She rubbed her hand back and forth across her neck, feeling the hum of her voice through her throat; the repetitive motion helped. 

“Gorgeous girl, it’s all right,” Mum said, firmly holding her hand.

Lisa tried to stay calm. They pushed her into a room with a lot of people and machines. It was very bright. Lisa didn’t like it.

But the doctor was there. “You’re fine, Lisa. We’re going to do this slow and easy, and I’ll tell you what I’m doing before I do it? I hear you’re a fan of Frozen.”

Thoroughly distracted, Lisa didn’t mind much the blanket fiddling and the hand touching. She didn’t like the thing they put over her nose and mouth though; it was smelly. But the doctor had warned her, and Lisa was excited about her new Frozen watch.

As Lisa’s eyes slowly closed, she felt calm. She knew that she would be better after this, that her tooth wouldn’t hurt anymore.

The doctor was smiling. Lisa wasn’t scared.
